To avoid plagiarism, I think that one should cite their sources so that credit can be given where credit is due. When someone uses something that you created without given you credit, I would address them and find out why they are taking all the credit when it was me that did the work. See what response I get and if further action needs to be taken that is what I will do.
In the real world when plagiarism is being done it is always handeled in a professional way, whereas those individuals are confronted and asks why? If no good answers a given, a penalty is applied.
I do not think that the internet blurs the line of "legally owned". I may be wrong but if I am just let me know.
